NEPC Member Beth Ann Hooper’s debut novel The Roots That Clutch, which also includes some of her poetry, was named the 2024 Winner Book Cover Design and Distinguished Favorite World Literature by the Independent Press Award. The novel was also named Distinguished Favorite in World Literature 2024 by the NYC Big Book Award.

Based on a true story, The Roots That Clutch tells the story of a budding young poet and writer who discovers through her PhD research on the great poets T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound that her grandmother had had an affair with the other titan of Modernist poetry, William Carlos Williams.

NEPC member Jonas Zdanys shared a flurry of incredible accomplishments:

1️⃣ Weaving Shade: Contemporary Dream Poetry, an international anthology edited by Jonas, will be published this fall by Lamar University Press. It’s a companion to his acclaimed Contemporary Surrealist and Magical Realist Poetry.

2️⃣ He received a grant from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture for Išeivystės fragmentai (Immigration Fragments), his sixth poetry book written in Lithuanian and published in Lithuania.

3️⃣ My Uncle’s Watch was released as a handmade fine arts edition by Gray Willow Press in collaboration with Forgetgutenberg and Timberline Press.

4️⃣ He’s been selected for the Australian anthology 100 Poets, edited by Brian Purcell and Kit Kelen (Flying Island Books, 2025).

5️⃣ Jonas is profiled in Heritage, Connection, Writing, a new book by Prof. Laima Vincė on North American Lithuanian diaspora writers, to be published globally by Peter Lang.

6️⃣ His ekphrastic poetry is featured in Ekphrastic Poetry: An Introduction by Prof. Cassandra Atherton, coming this fall from Princeton University Press.
